Helena Wojtczak is indubitably a woman of Sussex: born in the West, she was raised in Brighton and lives in the East.

Among her five previous books are Women of Victorian Sussex: Their Status, Occupations and Dealings with the Law 1830~1870; and Railwaywomen: Exploitation, Betrayal and Triumph in the Workplace.

In 2007 she won the David St John Thomas Trust Award and Silver Cup for Self-Publishing and its Non-Fiction Book of the Year Prize.
